Trying to
learn words on a list by rote memory is inefficient, even if they are ‘tricky’
words.
We store
words in an oral filing system; each word made up of a unique sequences of
sounds.
We can
read words automatically, and without conscious effort, when we have learned
how to connect the sounds in the word with the correct sequence of
letters.
The
'Heart Word' method draws on this to teach high-frequency words to beginning readers.

My
name is Dee and I am an Irish Primary School teacher. I’ve
been teaching since 2005, and a Mammy since 2008. I have worked in three very
different schools and have taught most class levels. Songs, stories and
playtime are part of our daily routine.
As
a teacher and a parent, I am constantly learning. I am passionate about making
school a fun learning environment for all. I have particular interests in Play,
Music, Picturebooks and STEM; basically, any subject where teacher and children
can be creative and have fun. I love to share ideas with other
teachers.
I
am currently studying for a PhD in Literacy Education in Mary Immaculate
College, which is tough, but enjoyable!
